Your suspension keeps the tyres on the road, controls body roll and keeps the ride comfortable. Because it wears gradually, many drivers do not notice how tired it has become. Watch for these five signs.
1. A bouncy or floaty ride
If the car keeps bouncing after a speed bump, the shock absorbers or struts are likely worn. Worn dampers also lengthen braking distances. See shock absorbers and struts.
2. Clunks and knocks
Noises over bumps or when turning often point to worn ball joints, bushes, sway-bar links or strut mounts. These are small parts, but they affect steering and stability.
3. Uneven tyre wear
Cupped or one-sided tyre wear is a classic sign of worn suspension components or poor alignment. Have both checked together.
4. Nose-dive when braking, or leaning in corners
Excessive body movement means the dampers and springs are no longer controlling the car’s weight. Worn springs can also cause the vehicle to sit low on one side.
5. Fluid on the shocks
Oily, wet-looking dampers have leaked and need replacing. Replace shocks and struts in axle pairs for balanced handling.
What to do next
Have a mechanic inspect the suspension, then use the Vehicle Finder to find the correct parts for your vehicle. Always fit replacement suspension parts correctly and have the wheel alignment checked afterwards.
