Remote travel punishes vehicles. A few hours in the driveway before departure can save a ruined trip, a long tow and a big bill. Use this checklist as a starting point.
Engine and fuel
- Replace the air filter, or check it and carry a spare if you will be on dusty tracks. See air filters.
- Replace the fuel filter and consider carrying a spare – bad fuel is a common cause of breakdowns. See fuel filters.
- Inspect all belts and hoses for cracks, glazing or soft spots. See belts & pulleys and hoses.
Cooling
Heat and dust are hard on cooling systems. Check coolant level and condition, the radiator cap and thermostat, and the fan. See cooling parts.
Brakes and suspension
Heavy loads and corrugations test both. Check pad thickness, brake fluid condition, shock absorbers, bushes and springs. If you have added weight or a lift, make sure the suspension is rated for it. Browse brakes and suspension.
Protection and recovery
Underbody protection, a snorkel for water crossings and the right recovery gear make a real difference. See the full 4×4 & Off-Road range.
Spares worth carrying
- Spare belts, hoses and clamps
- Fuses, relays and a basic electrical kit
- Wheel bearing and tyre repair basics
- Engine oil and coolant top-up
Whatever you carry, make sure you know how to fit it before you leave.
